I love my iphone. The design is amazing and the iPhone apps allow me to check in, manage my time, and get some entertainment on the go all in one device.
I have quite a few go to iPhone apps that I use that help me out with my various blogging needs. Need some help with time management? How about taking some quick notes? Need a break from work? There’s an app for that.
I’d like to share with you some of the staple iPhone apps that I’ve downloaded. Not all of these are specifically just for blogging, but they all help you out in your daily lives on some level. And anything that makes you more efficient will help you become a better blogger:
1. Evernote
This is one of my favorite iPhone apps for taking notes. It syncs automatically and is intuitive and easy to use. I can create text notes, take photos and record voice notes. Although, I primarily use the text note feature. I can create a quick note on the fly and access it later on my home computer.
2. WordPress
This is a neat little iPhone app if you are on the wordpress platform and want do a little blogging on the fly. While it’s not ideal to type out a lengthy blog on an iphone, this is useful for pushing out quick updates. It’s really best for short posts. There aren’t a lot of iPhone apps just for blogging, this is one of the few that allow you to manage all different aspects of your wordpress blog.
3. Pocket Informant (Calendar & Tasks) – Web Information Solutions, Inc.
I have been a big fan of Pocket Informant before there ever was an iphone. The color coded calendaring system is just awesome. This is one of the few iPhone apps where I feel that there is a good balance between the task management and the calendaring functions. With their iPhone app, they’ve added location functionality as well as adding a host of features. This is just one of the best time management and productivity iPhone apps in the store.
Gotta love voice search! Google’s voice recognition technology is really second to none. They spent years giving out free 411 service just so they could pick up voice samples to refine this technology. This is really evident in this iPhone app, which allows you to search the internet by speaking into your phone. It’s really handy for those situations where you need to look something up quick.
Note: Since this post was written, Apple released siri, which makes a lot of iPhone apps like this one somewhat obsolete. However, google’s still one of the best iPhone apps for conducting internet searches.
5. Dragon Dictation – Nuance Communications
This iPhone app is good for taking short notes. It allows you to speak into your phone and then it will dictate your spoken word. It is prone to mistakes, so it’s best for short reminders. I use this to make a note when I come up with post ideas. It’s a good way to give myself a reminder.
Note: See previous note about siri. Though I’ve always liked dragon dictation, I’m afraid Siri does make these iPhone apps obsolete.
6. Reeder
Of course, if you are a blogger, you probably subscribe to a ton of rss feeds. Reeder is by far one of the best rss feed readers. Reeder syncs unread and starred items from Google Reader. The UI is intuitive and easy to use. It gives you a number of options to share through email, twitter or your newsfeed. You can also save your article to read later.
7. Waze – Social GPS navigation, traffic & road reports – Waze Inc.
I bet you didn’t expect to see a navigation app on this list. The concept and functionality of Waze was just so amazing, I just had to include it. And it’s the only free turn by turn navigation app that I found! But in all seriousness, it’s more than just a navigation app. Waze has taken the concept of social media and put it into GPS Navigation. You can connect with other people, but more importantly, you can put updates into the map and it will automatically send those updates out across the social network. Just imagine the applicability of this function if you are running a location based business around your blog. This is one of my favorite iPhone apps overall.
Microblogging on the iphone is the one thing that can be done fairly effectively. The 140 characters on twitter is same as sending a text message. Twitteriffic is a fully functional twitter app that allows you to keep in touch with twitter.
9. ClickyTouch
Clicky Touch is a third party app developed for Clicky Web Analytics. I love Clicky Web Analytics. I actually prefer Clicky over Google Analytics for most situations. Their big advantage is being able to provide real time analytics. Although I will warn you that having real time analytics is quite addicting. If you use Clicky Web Analytics on your site, this application is a good counterpart that allows you to check your stats from your phone.
10. Skype
Skype is one of the best communications tools available overall. Now that they bring the ability to video conference to the iphone, you’ll always be able to have a face to face meeting with your clients or your team. This is a fantastic iPhone app. While it works best if you have an iphone 4 due to the front facing camera, it’s still a wonderful tool if you use it just for voice communications. If you have a skype button on your blog to allow people to contact you by voice, this will really help you add value to your blog.
Bonus App
11. Angry Birds
Okay, this isn’t strictly a blogging app, but no iphone apps list would be complete without Angry Birds. Here’s my attempt to make this related to blogging: You can’t sit for hours in front of a computer without a short break, right? You need to take some time away from the keyboard for some stress relief. What better way than to play Angry Birds? This is probably the best $0.99 you’ll ever spend on your iphone.
Enjoy!
This is by no means a complete list of iphone apps, but they are a few that will increase your productivity on the go.
Thx for the top 10 apps! I love the last (11th) app! Haha. You're right. Sometimes we just need to chill and cool after blogging, and there's no better way by playing Angry Birds!
Hi Ding,
Thanks for your visit! I think taking breaks is a good way to stay productive. Just be careful with angry birds. A 10 minute break could turn into an hour! 🙂
Hello Richard,
You know I have seen a lot of website offering free apps and a lot of them are very useful for bloggers like those that keep you in touch with many of your social networks account, but I have a big problem, I don't have an Iphone :(.
I really want to buy one but I can't make my mind between, IPhone, HTC, Nexus (samsung right?) or any other smartphone out there. Everytime I have the money and want to buy one, my eye is caught by an other shiny phone and I just can't make my mind.
What is strange, is that you didn't mention any app that helps you connect with facebook…
You're right. I missed the facebook app. I can't believe I did that! I actually use facebook's facebook app. Although I have to say that I tend to use twitter and check on my blog on my iphone more than I facebook. That's probably just a personal habit.
Hi Richard,
Thanks for sharing such useful iPhone Applications. These all are awesome. I was searching an application for WordPress Blog.
Regards
Hi Nazim,
Glad you enjoyed this list of iphone apps.
This is perhaps the most thoughtful, useful article of this type I’ve seen. It goes beyond a lot of the surface-level ideas I’ve seen repeated over and over in other places. Nicely said 🙂
My recent post Add Floating Social Buttons In Thesis Theme Without Using Plugin

Evernote is great App. Thanks for the share. I will test the other ones.
It looks like I've seen an interesting apps. Angry Birds! i love this game but still not using i phone. I can't wait to have one Richard. haha
Hi Aika,
If you really love angry birds, you can get the free desktop version with the chrome browser.
I have most of the applications that you featured here including Angry Birds that I seemed to be so addicted to, but what I am curious is the Dragon dictation. Is it free? It could help me to remind me of my schedules.
My recent post Lebensmittel, die schlank machen
Hi Mike,
Dragon dictation is free. It's pretty useful for voice dictation. although I believe that their technology may be built into the ios 5 if you update to the new iphone 4s. The siri functions will likely do the same thing that you're looking into with better integration with the iphone operating system.
Hey you are right that these 10 applications are useful for every blogger. thank you for your valuable information.
Great Article. Thanks for providing the list of top 10 apps which are useful for the bloggers.
Hey,
Thank you sharing this amazing post with us. They are definitely very useful. And yes love angry birds, what a stress buster.
Cheers.
I am a bit familiar with Google Mobile Apps and using freely. I am happy to see Dragon Dictation for my daily work on phone. The rest of the applications weren’t used by me, so I will try and share my views later. By the way, Thanks for wonderful compilation.
