MBA is more like a double-edged sword, with its promise of a fat paycheck and high-flying career going hand in hand with the grim reputation it holds as a grinding experience for students. If you have just made it through one of the top b-schools of the country, there couldn’t be a better time to learn the basics of surviving through the rigors of MBA education.
The news about someone getting selected in a management school of his/her choice invites a lot of hearty congratulations and best wishes. The student is led to believe that all his hard work and brilliance has finally paid off, dreaming about an exciting college life that lies ahead. It’s only a matter of time before the candidate plunges into the world of MBA and that’s the moment when a realization draws upon him. MBA is not the sweet candy that he was hoping it to be after all. The mounting pressure of daily assignments and weekly tests, grinding sessions of debates and presentations followed by marathon end semester exams gets too much to handle, followed by disastrous consequences like nervous breakdown. This is a common scenario where many students find themselves today. However, you can avoid stranding in such a situation with a little preparation and awareness.
The first thing you need to do for any hopes of achieving success at any B school, save it is IIM Calcutta or ISB, Hyderabad, is to divide your time across different activities perfectly. You will need to prioritize the tasks at hand. Unlike the undergrads, most of those who enroll for a management degree at b schools are there to learn and not just fulfill an obligation towards their parents or society. Moreover, you will be doling out a whole lot of your hard earned cash for earning the MBA degree. A PGDM from IIM costs upward of INR 15 lacs, a sum too large to let go of waste. This motivation will help keep you focused and engaged.
Break down targets
Almost all of your assignments will have submission deadlines which will be told to you weeks or days in advance. Here you have an opportunity to break these far-off targets into intermediate deadlines of your own. This is an effective way of making sure that you do not spend too much time drooling over a single topic or do not leave it all for the end.
Find what kind of learner you are; aural, independent study, group-study, tactile and accordingly find or create an environment that allows you to learn comfortably. Know your strengths and use them to your favor. Similarly, have an understanding of your limitations and improve upon them. Create your own study area that gives you a quiet and private place to work. The study area should be free from distractions and equipped with all necessary material including textbooks, notepads, highlighters and others.
Taking notes might feel cumbersome at first, but soon you will realize that these notes are your best friend in the two-year long journey to accomplishment of a MBA degree. Notwithstanding all the journals and textbooks, the half-filled half-empty bunch of papers scribbled with your ball point pen hold more relevance in your preparation of end semester examination as they are easy to remember and instantly connect with the context of the topic being discussed. You can better the traditional note taking system through the use of mobile devices like laptops and tablets, which have various applications to streamline the process. After completion of the lecture, go through the notes to make sure it make sense whatever you have written. Furthermore, regularly reviewing the notes reduces the efforts required while preparing for end-sem exams.
While most of us are afflicted with this bug of dragging our feet through different tasks at some point of our life, students are particularly more prone to this shilly-shallying. If you want your stay at a premiere B school like IIM Calcutta or IIM Ahmadabad to remain relatively issue free procrastination is one devil that you will have to learn to overcome. The counter measures include making a list of tasks you have at hand and assorting them as per their deadlines. Use daily planners or set reminders for a more effective approach. It can sometimes get overwhelming as in a dynamic environment of a B school the priorities keep changing, wrestling with each other for attention. Set up self rewarding system where you facilitate yourself with small incentives on successful completion of an assignment. Use this time to clear your mind of all the clutter that might be distracting it. Besides, if you have a task at hand that won’t last more than 5 to 10 minutes, do it right away and get over with it.
Develop communication skills
While pursuing MBA degree is not an easy task by any standards, the toughest ride is for those who have hesitation speaking their mind. It doesn’t matter that you were born an introvert, if you want to make a mark among the hundreds of MBA aspirants in your college; presence of effective communication skill is indispensable. Even if you do not dominate the conversation, there must be some kind of contribution from your side. Keeping quiet when everyone is participating in a debate or discussion will render you invisible, giving the competition an edge over you.
