As a new site, I am always on the lookout for new blog promotion ideas and techniques. In searching for ways to promote my site, I’ve signed on for several ad exchange programs, one of which is Entrecard. This is a blog exchange program that allows you to place a widget on your site which will display ads for other users, while your site will begin showing as ads on their entrecard widget.
The idea is pretty simple – every person who signs up creates an a pseudo-business card – basically a 125×125 pixel ad to promote your site. You then can promote your site in two ways. You can either visit another user’s page and “drop” your card on their widget, or purchase advertising.
There is a credit system, and for every dropped card you earn a credit – but that’s not where it ends. Credits can be used to buy the advertising space provided on other sites, by every entrecard widget. There is an approval system, so any advertising request has to be approved by the potential adspace owner, and the purchase price for each user’s entrecard space is figured based on the number of cards people have dropped into the inbox of that user. In addition, as a publisher of people’s ads you earn credits equal to half of the cost to advertise on your widget. Ads run for 24 hour blocks, and each user’s account has a limited number of spaces in the ad queue. Also, there is a system where the cost of advertising on your site increases as it is booked, and can also decrease over time.
As a new user, I found that I did get a rush of traffic from people checking out my site as I dropped my card around the network. I do notice an ebb and flow to the traffic on my site as I increase my advertising campaign. I also get a sense that dropping my card on other sites increases the visibility of my site as well. Finally, I also found some benefits to surfing through other sites that are related to mine as many have areas for leaving comments, backlinks, and link exchange.
Right now, Entrecard is running a contest to give out 5000 to anyone who writes a review of their site. Check it out.
