The holidays are right around the corner and if your household is anything like mind, thoughts turn towards shopping. After all, black friday is right around the corner and we are starting to see some holiday deals pop up. It’s a great time for an affiliate marketer.
Even if your niche is not in the traditional holiday gift category, you’d may still se a jump in conversions for the products that you are selling. When the holiday season comes around, people just fall into a buying mood. Perhaps it’s because it’s momentum from all the other holiday shopping they are doing, or maybe they are getting some holiday bonuses, maybe your affiliate products have some kind of holiday discount. Whatever the reason, you should keep some of these thoughts in mind and consider making some adjustments.
There are a few things that you can do to try and optimize for the holiday season.
Suggest Some Holiday Gifts for your Audience
First off, you could simply write a post and suggest some gifts. After all, ’tis the season for giving. People are looking to give gifts to others. Perhaps you could suggest some items within your niche that might be of interest. For instance, if you know an aspiring blogger, perhaps Problogger’s book about How to Build a Better Blog in 31 Days might make the perfect gift!
Research Your Affiliate Programs for Holiday Specials
Take a look through your affiliates and see if any of them are starting to offer any special deals for the holidays. Some of them may have some special banners made up for Christmas or Thanksgiving. Some advertisers create discounts specially for a particular holiday. If you learn about these discounts ahead of time, you could start writing about an upcoming discount. This can work particularly well when an affiliate program offers a one day discount. You’ll see many discounts that are set for the Friday after Thanksgiving, commonly known as Black Friday. The reason this works is that it creates a scarcity in the Marketplace. People know that the discount applies for one day only.
If you have an affiliate program that is offering such a deal, don’t wait till the last minute to try and capitalize on the deal. You should write up some posts ahead of time to start letting your readers know to prepare for the sale. Write up a new review and let your readers know to take a look at the product early so they can do their research in advance. At the same time, let them know that there is an upcoming one day sale of the item. Do this a few weeks in advance so that your readers have an opportunity to look at the product and think about the purchase. Also, they will see the regular price of the product and begin to anticipate the sale if they are interested. Then you can follow this up with a reminder post or newsletter. The idea is to make them aware of the product and the upcoming deal. Also, you let them know that it’s a one time only offer and it builds up scarcity. Often times, affiliate programs will also have a limited supply of the product at the discount price. You’ll also want to include the information that there are only a few items at that price, so your customers will know to purchase the item on sale day early.
Look into New Affiliate Programs
If after reviewing your affiliate programs, you find that none of them are suitable for promotion during the holidays, perhaps you may want to consider expanding your niche a bit. There are many large retailers that have affiliate programs that you can join. Amazon, Walmart, iTunes, etc… all of these retailers have good, reputable affiliate programs. Often, you can find products that will fit into your niche, or are closely enough related that you can add them to your repertoire. I would recommend joining one of the affiliate networks such as Commission Junction or Linkshare. Both of these programs have a large marketplace of retailers. Linkshare in particular has many good affiliate program listings such as buy.com, iTunes, and Walmart. These are retailers that tend to do particularly well during the holidays, so you want to apply to their programs now to prepare.
Pay Attention to Your Analytics
Keep an eye on your analytics as well. Sometimes, you may get better conversions during the holiday season from ads that don’t do as well during other times. Banner ads and widgets in your sidebar may actually see an increase in clickthroughs. With this in mind, you may want to adjust some of your display ads. If you see a particular section of your blog doing well, you may want to change up the add to promote a holiday deal. If you see a certain affiliate program getting a rise in clickthroughs, perhaps its time to do a new writeup on that affiliate program. Your analytics can show you which areas of your blog and which programs are gaining seasonal interest.
Create Your Own Deals
If you have your own products, you might want to think about creating your own holiday deal. Do a 50% off for Black Friday deal. You want to advertise your holiday deal the same way that you do with an affiliate program. Let people know about the product, the deal and the date of the deal. You can even set it up so that only a certain number of items are available for the discounted price.
The other thing you may want to do is to invest on some special holiday banner ads to advertise your products. These you can put on your front page to give your blog a seasonal look and attract some attention to your own products.
Give Some Gifts
You may not have thought of this, but the holiday season can be a good time to promote your blog or website as well. Besides just trying to make a profit, what you can do is share in the the season of giving. You may want to create a product just to use as a gift to your audience for the holidays. Do a special promotion for people who sign up for your list during the holidays. Also, you may want to think about sending your list a gift or even just a Christmas card. Take the time to give something away and you’ll build up your customer loyalty and promote yourself at the same time.
