Richard,

My brother lives in Ca. and got the same thing. really the writing has been on the wall for a while. I think it has been almost a year since Amazon drew the line in the sand when this first happened in Colorado.

It is certainly 100% about money. It is mostly the big-box stores (wal-mart etc.) who are trying to push this. Of course the governments think they will make more money, and Amazon wants to fight it to keep their costs low (and market share high)

Personally I think the State Governments and box stores are in the wrong, although regardless of who is "wrong" it is an absolute fact that the people who suffer are the "little people".

It is quite unfortunate that it is always the "little people" who get crushed in these circumstances.

While I am disappointed in Amazon as well as the government, I think this is really a result of people who don't report the taxes when they make an online purchase. If you really think about this, the only thing this law does is shift the burden of reporting the taxes from the individual over to the eCommerce company. I suppose, I'm less offended by the stance that the state is taking than by the way that Amazon is handling the situation. Amazon is punishing the affiliates and hoping that everyone will blame the state.

Richard,

Chris Guthrie also blogged about this:

He offered a workaround, if you happen to live in California and your account was shut down.

I saw that also Timo. Chris' way of establishing an out of state corporation is much safer than what others are suggesting. (using someone else's address, which I suspect is a TOS violation) However, you'll have to weigh the cost and benefit of setting up a corporation, which requires filing fees and then working out the income tax violations when you pay yourself. That's a whole other can of worms. You really have to be earning a good amount of income from Amazon to make that route worthwhile IMHO.

Actually, if one is earning a full time income from the internet, it may simply be easier to pick up and move out of state rather than going about setting up a corporation.

That was mean! I had to click, but didn't get the information for me, Mean mean mean headline :P

Sorry I scared you, but this was terrible news for so many people out there, myself included. That was basically the notice that I got.
