With the new year upon us, it’s a good time to think about our blogging activities and strategize some different ways that we can improve our blogs.  What can we do differently in the new year?  How can we improve our blogging skills?

Here are some of my own blogging resolutions for the new year:

Improve My Content

There’s always room for improvement.  The main key is to stay consistent and continue writing.  I work hard to put out at least a post a day.  Generally, I try to do my writing in the morning before work.  I’ll wake up early and take the first hours of the day to write.  If I do happen to miss my morning blogging session, I’ll make up for it at the end of the day after work.  There are days that I am just beat from all my activities and I don’t feel like blogging.  Those are the days that I really need to work on to push myself to write a post.

As long as I stay consistent, I know that my writing will improve.  My goal this year is to continue with my consistency and continue improving my writing.  This is a good resolution for everyone.

Be Creative

There are times for the boring old list post and good old seo.  But we all need to practice our unique voice.  Some of the funnest posts that I’ve written were the off the wall creative ones.  I had tons of fun writing the post about the modern day blogging Shakespeare and social media zombification.  This year I’d like to put out more posts such as those.  They were fun to write and I believe they were fun to read.  While the old staples are good for when I’ve got some blogger’s block, creative posts make for a more lively blog.

Check my Analytics Less

This may seem counterintuitive, but I’ve started thinking that checking analytics too often has just become a tremendous time sink.  My great vice has been checking on my blog’s stats too often throughout the day.  It’s just exciting to see my visitor count go up through the day, but it’s hugely unproductive.  This is one of the downsides of real time analytics.  Most of the time, my hourly and daily stats just don’t matter.  Sure, it’s nice to know that I get traffic spikes between 8-9 am and 12-1pm in the afternoon.  But overall, I can’t make too many changes on those kinds of micro stats anyways.

The other thing is that micro stats don’t show the big picture of your blog’s growth.  I’ve found that when I look at my day to day changes, I end up agonizing over the normal daily fluctuations.  There’s no need to worry when Thursday’s stats dip below Wednesday’s stats.  Invariably, the stats will average out and show growth over a month’s time.  Being able to look back over a year’s time has just taught me that the big picture is the most important indicator.

I think I can be more productive and less stressed overall if I check my analytics less.

Improve the Visitor Experience

If you’ve been  here before, you’ve probably noticed the look of the blog has changed a bit.  Upgrades to the look and style of the blog can improve the overall user experience.  My goal this year is to continue improving the look of the blog as well as the speed and load times to improve the overall user experience.

The most important thing of a blog is the visitor’s experience.  If you all enjoy your visit here and want to come back, then I’ve done my job.  As this blog continues to grow and generate revenue, I am able to reinvest that money and improve the blog.

Continue Growing Revenue

It’s not about the money.  However, growing my revenue allows me to continue reinvesting my earnings back into the blog.  Also, the growth of this blog is a continuing learning experience.  With each new revenue stream, I’m learning what works and what doesn’t work.  This year, I’ve learned a great deal about running a successful blog.  All of it has to do with on the job learning.  The continued progress and growth of this blog is a sign that I am continuing to learn and grow as a blogger as well.  Continued revenue growth is a sign of progress overall.
