Google adsense has quickly become one of the most common ways to create an online business.
You can create a simple web presence about anything you want and publish Google Adsense ads as long as it follows the Google Adsense Guidelines. There are some websites which are not allowed such as any illegal websites, make money online websites, and pharmacy websites.
If you create a website on a topic which you have a lot of interest such as fishing, writing, or whatever you find interesting you should try to publish Adsense to start making money online. Google Adsense is a simple program which will let you sign up for free. Once you have signed up you can create an ad in whatever colors and size you want. After the ad is created Google Adsense will give you the HTML for the ad and all you need to do for publishing is copy and paste the HTML onto your website. There are certain platforms such as blogger.com that will automate the monetization process, but personally I prefer copy and pasting the ads.
Before you can begin publishing Google Adsense ads you will need a booming web presence that is getting traffic. Really there is no reason to publish any ads if your website is getting low to no traffic you should wait until you are ranking in Google and other major search engines for competitive terms.
If you would like to start a presence go to blogger.com, wordpress.com, 000webhost.com, or webs.com. All of these will allow you to create a free website or blog. These also will give you a free domain name which will save you around ten dollars per year. Personally I think the best type of presence is a blog since updating is extremely easy. During the creation of your web presence you can begin thinking about where you would like to display ads after your website becomes successful.
After the presence is up and running with a decent amount of traffic it is time to place the ads. There are two things which determine how much you can make from your adsense ads.
The first and most important is how much traffic you are getting. If you are only getting a few hits per day then you will not earn very much from adsense. One good rule of thumb is you will earn approximately one dollar for every hundred visitors. This of course is only a estimation since the income differs from keyword to keyword, but in my experience running an online business blog and internet marketing blog the average amount I earn is one dollar per hundred visitors.
The other factor that will determine how much you will make from adsense is the placement of the ads. To find the best place you will need to experiment with different placements. In my experience the highest clicked on placement is above the fold and towards the center of the presence.
If you are looking a program as an alternative or an additional source of income to Google Adsense, try out Chitika. I like that you have mentioned Chitika too. I have AdSense on my static website and it is making enough at least for the website to pay for itself.
After I learned about Chitika, I liked that it can be put on the same page as AdSense so I put it on my most visited pages. The ads look great and they are not into your face.
Although it is making small amount of money I still like the diversity of ads on my site.
I agree, having diversity is great. Also, I like that you can select the option to keep the ad collapsed except for search engine traffic, so it only shows to your targeted visitors.
Yes, I actually have both Chitika and AdSenseon my website. Both of them are great and can be configured to your liking. I think your rule of thumb $1 per 100 visitors is good! I hate how Google is so strict about all their guidelines though.

Google is very strict about their guidelines. Overall, I'm not as big a fan of pay per click advertising as opposed to affiliate sales. I do have some for the sake of diversity, but would rather stick to affiliate programs.
Hmmm… I've heard a lot about Chitika but have never used it before. I'll have to check it out. Thanks, Richard!
Chitika's great. I can integrate it with my adsense. Or if I don't want to have too many pay per click ads, I can run it by itself and it's very non-intrusive.
AdSense is a easy way to make money with any kinds of website that are accepted by Google guidelines.
But, you have to have lots of visitors or lots of website to really have any impact over your incomes. When with one affiliate based website with only 50 visitors you can make what 10 websites or even more make with adsense.
Maybe there are exception where you have a niche with very high cpc and you might really make some bucks with your website, with a relatively low visitors count.
One thing I that is cool about AdSense is that it can almost be considered a passive income. You can make a small website with a few hundreds of visits per day and only update it two or three times a month and some hours of link building.
Couldn't agree more on "there is no reason to publish any ads if your website is getting low to no traffic"!
I really hate it when I see a new site that already has ads all over the place, gives me the impression that the webmaster just created it for gaining money, rather than to actually contribute something..
Adsense isnt great for new websites , integrated over time when traffic is built up and visitors are gained is the best way to use it , Like a previous poster said if u usee it from the start it can often detract away from your content .
I agree. I tend to stay away from using adsense, especially on a new website. The problem with pay per click ads are that they tend to take people away from your site. So you definitely want to have an established following so that people will come back and you have a steady flow of visitors when you do use pay per click advertising.
The how much question is hard to answer because it depending on your traffic per month.
Adsense if fun for certain sites but if you're looking for a long term earning than it doesn't really hold up over time, unless you have insane amounts of traffic and click throughs. For that reason, Adsense can be fine when things are running smoothly but once the spikes start coming in, that's when affiliate marketing and creating your own product should definitely take over.
Hi Murlu,
That's a really good point about how the different spikes will affect your earnings. Essentially, you are relying on the level of traffic to your site to support your potential earnings. However, the downside to adsense is that it will take readers off your site. This is particularly important if you rely on the depth of your content to build a relationship with your readers.
So how much is a lot of traffic and how much is not enough?
It depends on your niche, but I would say you want to see between 50-100 visitors coming in from search engine traffic to start seeing decent income from Adsense.
Yes we need lots of things to gain money from adsense not only traffic. Thanks
