If you’re running a make money blog or a blogging about blogging blog and you find yourself writing all about making money, then you’re trying too hard.
Did you know that making money with your blog isn’t just about making money?
Just think back on some of your favorite posts by your favorite bloggers. I’ll bet many of them don’t have anything to do with making money.
I find the best posts are those that either share a philosophy or teach something of value. The best posts are the ones that give away great free value without requiring anything in return.
Here’s a few examples of posts from awesome making money blogs (or blogging blogs) that have absolutely nothing to do with making money:
- My Insanity Results from Smart Passive Income
- Finding Balance-Saving Time from Blogging Without a Blog
- How I Became an Extreme Minimalist Without Even Realizing It from Blogging Bookshelf
Go ahead, read through those posts.
Do you notice an interesting trend? They have absolutely nothing to do with making money.
Each post focuses on making some kind of lifestyle improvement or change. The ideas in each post can be implemented not only on a blog, but in our overall lives if we chose.
Yet, if you follow these bloggers and the bloggers, each of them is finding success online.
Which begs the question…
Do All Your Posts Need to Be About Making Money?
We are often told that “content is king” and we need to continue filling our blogs with content in order to get traffic. The ultimate goal is to turn your blog profitable.
Does that train of thought sound familiar?
So, typically, if one were to follow that advice, they may begin by picking a niche.
So, right off the bat, you are looking for some product to sell to somebody. Then you read up and learn about the product.
Whew! Are you getting tired yet?
Probably not. You’re still carried on by the excitement of the possibility of making money online.
Then you launch your website.
- You start blogging about your niche, mostly talking about different ways of making money.
- You mention your product.
- You write pillar articles. Tutorials all about your chosen topic.
- But as time goes by, you find that you can only talk about making money so many different ways.
- After a month, you are starting to scour the internet for ideas.
- You’re trying out new products to pitch.
- Another month goes by. You start to adjust your posting frequency.
- You write a post about adjusting your posting frequency.
- You hit blogger’s block.
- You write a post about getting past blogger’s block.
Whew this is getting tiring…
Does this pattern sound familiar?
The problem is you’re trying too hard.
Not all of your posts need to be about making money.
Making money is such a small part of being successful in life as a whole, why should it be the only focus of your blog?
Blogging should be about expressing yourself.
Why limit yourself to simply talking about money?
Yes, yes. You’re trying to run a make money blog. But making money is such a small part of being successful in life. Why should it be such a large part of your blog?
Isn’t your blog really about finding a way to be successful online? It’s kind of looking at a slice of your life.
It’s so much easier to express yourself when you are talking things other than money. Think about any conversation that you’ve had with your friends. How much of it is about money? Even when you talk about life, the universe and everything.
You can spend all night passing time talking about life and never cross the subject of money. Yet, when you think back, those nights probably end up being your fondest memories.
Blogging is the same way.
But What About Focus?
Everyone talks about focus. Even I talk about having focus in some of my articles here. But focus is a funny thing.
You want to have a focus on your goals, but keep your vision broad.
It’s okay to open up your blog’s topic of discussion every once in a while. In fact, I think even when you have a make money blog, any topic that talks about success in life or improving your lifestyle can draw your audience.
If fact, your real goal should be about documenting and sharing your unique path to success.
There are a million ways to find success in your blog and your life. You need to share your unique path. You can only do that when you shift your focus off the narrow topics and broaden your horizons.
Focus on sharing yourself and your philosophies. You’ll find a wealth of information by looking within. You’ll find that when you broaden your topics, you can still maintain your focus and blogging will come so much easier.
Ultimately, your blog is about sharing yourself and your thoughts.
And you are so much more than just about money.
