Gone are the days when pilots used to stay awake for the whole journey. Step in today’s airplane and you may be surprised to see just how easy it is to fly a modern plane especially when it is off the air. Not to scare you but sometimes the pilot just kicks the plane into auto pilot. It means that the pilot just specifies the destination and then leaves the plane to get itself to where its course is set out. It is the feature of travel and a biggest tech news, at least, it is from the latest gossip. A hacker famed for his exploits or simply hacks into the big corporation toys such as the apple’s Iphone and the Sony Corporation PlayStation game console (which has seen him get into some trouble with Sony), is at it again. But this time, he is wiser and Gray. So far we cannot stop but love one George Hotz, who is just but 26. But don’t let age full you. He was the first to jailbreak the Iphone at the tender age of 17. Being a hacker means tinkering with a problem until you find a solution that is especially an easier way of doing something. Like most hacker Hotz main goal is to feed his curiosity rather than make money. It is reported that he refused to join Tesla for a handsome compensation in response Hotz choose to stick to his garage and to stick it to Mobileye- (a leader in the autonomous car navigation) from his garage. A real Goliath and David scenario. Let me show you how this is a hack, and by a hack, I mean a game changer in this space of autonomous driving.
Where self-Driving technology is at:
We are just in the beginning. And the new technology is expensive with few players who command the market. As I had said earlier Mobileye is the leading company, making components for automakers like Tesla and BMW, and they have done a decent job. But we are not quite there. BMW, for instance, have a self-driving mechanism that allows you to leave the car to search for parking space in a mall as you go in to do your shopping, Impressed? We still have a long way to go if we are to go full autonomous. The most important thing to watch out for will be the cost once the cost of making a car autonomous drops considerably then we can have it on each and every car that ships from the company. Again if the technology also improves to allow the car to be fully automated. Such that we can have connected self driving cars, and they could optimize our routes and choose the best route to take.
Hotz hack has two features that make it HOT pun intended. The fact that he was able to fund this project and at the same time he built it from his garage. Which means that he was conservative on the budget that he put into it. Just to show you how lean he was on the budget: the operating system that runs on the car is Linux- an open source operating system. It surely would have been a different case if he built it on proprietary software. Again the cameras used here are from the store making them easy to acquire. It means that if this is put on production and large scale the parts and software will be cheap. It will allow every car that is produced to be autonomous. Hence no need for that steering wheel or stick. Or just have it for redundancy sakes. Hotz the Sony and Iphone hacker latest creation will not only change the way the software is created but the scale at which it can be deployed. Thanks to him the future of autonomous driving may be here.
Soon you may not need to pick you kids at school. Rather you will just send your car with autonomous driving feature and give it a few errands to run like fuel yourself pass by the grocery store. And when you fly out of the country and you at the airport, just call your car and tell her to pick you up. Cool really cool, this is the stuff of the future. Let us see the Goliath- Big Corporation and David- Hotz battle go. I am rooting for Hotz though because cheaper will allow us to get there faster. And I think this technology if it is to be successful should be embraced by all not just a few automakers. Maybe am just dreaming, but we might as well say goodbye to traffic and accident. Boy oh boy, won’t that be something? It may be the biggest tech news thus far.
