Whenever one reads a report on a holiday destination or place to take a city break, one will find within the report a good deal of boasting about its wonderful and historical architecture. There will be lot of encouragement with regard to making sure that one spends plenty of time in their research so that one don’t miss something important. However, in every one of these destinations, there will also be estates made up of standard houses that are identical to each other. This article isn’t stating that these standard houses don’t make perfectly good homes and that they aren’t well built and well loved by many. But, and this is the real point, they are not something that the tourist board is going to be boasting about in years to come. These ‘Lego’ houses will not be used to encourage visitors. So should we be thinking more about designing houses that we can be proud of? Has the more standard type houses had their day? It’s a matter of responsibility, but whose responsibility is it? Is it the homeowner’s?
There are plenty of people who would argue that most cities do not really contain standard houses because these types of houses tend to be built on the outskirts. This is a very valid point but I would argue that every visitor has to enter the city one way or another and most of those routes will include a trip past at least one estate of standard houses. And anyway, shouldn’t a city tour involve the whole city? More tourists are becoming interested in the whole city in recent times, and not just the crowded exact center attractions of the city. In the cities themselves more and more often we see buildings being torn down and modern apartment blocks erected in their place. As far as many are concerned these are no different to standard houses and most of the time they are nothing to be proud of. Everyone knows they are simply built for economic reasons. So maybe as far as cities are concerned we should be concentrating on creating buildings that rival those built by the great architects of the past to ensure that we have a legacy that we can be proud of. The question to consider is how much of a possibility this is. Is it a realistic one?
All of that said, standard houses still remain a popular choice for many people that are looking to purchase their own home. Because the contractor is able to build a large number of standard homes quickly at the same time as being able to save on architect’s fees and planning costs, they are able to sell standard homes for less, which keeps them in the reach of the average person. When I write ‘average person’ I am referring to a person who earns a wage that is somewhere between the lofty top wages and the minimum wage. It is an economical summarization only.
There is another option for people, of course. If the current era is known for anything then it can be known for customer choice. So it is no surprise, or it should come as a little surprise, that there is a third choice. This is a choice that should not be forgotten, which is increasing in popularity again, and that is the option to build your own. Many people are making the decision to purchase a plot of land and then hire a company to construct a home that they have designed. On the surface of it, this sounds like an absolute dream, and it can work. Designing one’s home means that the finished article is a reflection of their taste and style and is nothing like the other houses that are situated close by.
There are many companies around that help people achieve their dream of building their own home and many will actually guide people through the whole process from purchasing the building plot to furnishing the finished house. It is a service that helps people fulfill their dreams, and this is something that should be appreciated by people who don’t want to live in standard houses, a block of flats, or something that resembles Lego that is tucked away on the side of town, away from the tourists in what appears to be an act of shame. Buying a plot of land and building one’s own house is a way of ensuring one’s house reflects their distinct personality.
Something that every person is aware of, but sometimes need a little reminding, is that houses are tremendously important places. There the places we eat, sleep, and spend the lion share of our time in. Besides the workplace, we spend nothing like the time we spend in our house anywhere else. It almost goes without saying that if we are unhappy with our house then we are likely to be unhappy in our general life. The reverse of this statement is that if we are happy with our house then we will likely be happy in our lives. What a tremendous opportunity a person has in designing their own home, having it built, and giving themselves a better chance of being happy in the long run.
So in conclusion
Standard houses (or known in Danish as “typehuse“) still have a place in society because there will always be a requirement for affordable housing. It simply wouldn’t be realistic for every person to plan and then build their own house. But those that have the funds and the choice will often opt for something else so that they can create something that people can admire in years to come. It will be interesting to see what influence this option has in years to come. People taking a tour of a certain city might be pointed out to a few well designed and aesthetically pleasing homes. If you’re on of the lucky ones and you are looking to plan and build your own house then maybe it might be one of your houses.
