Upgrading Your Old Computer Vs. Buying A New One

We all want to have the latest and greatest technology. And we may have seen lineups around the block when a new technology or device is released to the masses. But this has left many a technology user asking the same question: how can people possibly afford to upgrade their technology and devices so frequently?

The truth is that many people cannot. For a lot of us, technological advances are simply moving faster than the speed of our paychecks. And if the devices we use on a regular basis – such as our computers – are running slower than we are used to, it might be time to upgrade. Unfortunately, getting a new computer may be out of the question due to the high cost. But there is an alternative to buying a new computer – purchasing an older model.

Believe it or not, a slightly older computer doesn’t have to mean a slower computer. There are many web sites now online which are devoted to the sale of older computer models. And for the cash-strapped, buying an older model is bringing many advantages.

Research Is Vital

When seeking out an older model of computer, it is recommended that you do your research. This is because you need to know how older computer models compare to their more modern counterparts. If you aren’t technologically savvy, it may help to bring a knowledgeable friend on board to help you in this endeavor.

Discontinued Models

Computers which have been recently discontinued can mean a lot of money saved. There are many of these machines on the market. But the trick is to know how some computer manufacturers and companies do business. For retailers, a clean out of old inventory is necessary on a regular basis so that room for new computer models can be made.

For the manufacturer, the introduction of a new processor can mean they change their products. As a result, any references to discontinued products that exist on their web site may be removed. But while this can make finding discontinued products difficult, retailers can still be searched by product model. The way to do this effectively is to search for models that have the same specifications as a manufacturer’s new model. This way, the two models can be compared for any changes. As well, noting the price difference between products will help you make an informed decision.

Knowing When to Buy

Many have trouble determining when the best time to buy a new computer or upgrade their old one. Basically, if the system you are using now is over 5 years old, it may make more sense to buy a new PC. Just like a vehicle, you may find yourself replacing one part after another when your computer has reached a certain age. Upgrading components like the video card and hard drive can cost as much as a new computer, depending on the ones you choose.

If you have decided to upgrade your older system, the first thing to consider is what you plan to use that system for. In a scenario where you tend to travel a lot with your devices, you may want to ensure that the system will be able to handle that sort of activity. Applications are another consideration. If you need a system that can handle high-memory activities, such as working with audio and video, then upgrading your old system may not cut it. If this is the case, consider whether or not you can transfer some of these more intensive activities to another device, such as a laptop you may already have.

In some cases, it may make more sense to purchase a system that has been refurbished. But here too, taking caution is key. Find out the usage history of the system and take it for a test drive if possible. At the end of the day, doing your homework is the best way to make an educated choice about your next computer purchase or upgrade.
