We all know the common tactics to get our blog or website noticed. We write guest posts, or we comment a lot, or we get somebody to review our product on some website. The thing is, often that’s a lot of work. You either have to write the post, or the comment, or find the right blog to review your stuff and then send them your product to review.
And then you still have to make sure it actually gets accepted! Brother, what a headache
It doesn’t need to be that hard. Have you heard of top lists? If you haven’t, then read on, because they are a fantastic way to give your site a traffic boost.
Make certain you have great content
The very first thing that you’ll have to make certain of is that your content is actually good, that you have your own voice and that you’re rivaling the best. If you don’t have good content, you’re obviously going to struggle to get your site mentioned, as list makers will see that it’s subpar.
So the first step is to make certain that in the niche that you’re in, you’re at least in the top quarter of so of the sites. You don’t have to be at the top. You just have to be in the running. You see, most top list writers are writing their lists are no experts. They’re using lists to boost their own standing and as a result are often writing for multiple niches. That means that though they do research, they’re not all that sure of who is actually at the top or who is only near it.
Find the lists
The next step is to find out what lists there are out there. The easiest way to do this is just to type in the keywords that you’re interested in placing under and finding which lists come up. Then write down everything you can about those lists.
Don’t just write down the email address, but the writer’s name, some articles that are doing well and more information. All of this you’ll need to make your email personal so that they don’t feel like you’re spamming them.
If you’re particularly keen on getting on a list, then remember the power of reciprocity. The best way to use this is to write an article in which you find some way to reference their website. This should be easy to accomplish with the better top sites, as no doubt they’ll have other interesting content as well.
Use all the information that you gathered about them in the last step to write them a nice email about how you like what they’re doing. Make specific mention of some of their articles that you’ve liked and in passing mention that you’ve even linked to one of their articles because you liked it so much. Tell them about your own site.
Now if you’ve got the patience, this might be a good moment to wait a little bit to see if they get back to you. If they’re particularly diligent and take the time, they might decide that your site should be included on their list on their own. In this case, you don’t even need to ask.
If they don’t, then this is a good moment to mention that you saw their list and that your website might fit on their really well. Don’t reference back to the mention of their site on your own. They’ll remember. If things go well that will be enough.
It’s a numbers game
And just multiply that strategy by as many lists as you can find. Don’t be shy. Contact as many sites as you can in this way. Yes, it takes a little bit of work, but it will pay dividends if you do, particularly because writers are lazy on average and once you find yourself on a few lists, you’ll see that multiple as other writers plunder the lists already up to write their own.
And from there it’s just a simple matter of watching your website ratings rise.
Just keep at it. If you manage to write four such sites a month, which really shouldn’t take you more than an hour, that will put you up on more and more lists. Even better, start with some of the less shinny lists and you’ll probably get further as these people are less established and are going to appreciate your attention (and your link back) all the more.
From there you can then push up the rankings, as other sites become aware of your existence through those other sites. And once you’re on their radar, making the approach and asking to be mentioned will be that much more effective.
