I suppose when one discusses online technology and money the conversation drifts around to online casinos. Years ago I enjoyed visiting brick and mortar casinos and playing various games, including poker. Eventually as these activities became more available online, I enjoyed a period of time where I could play a few online casino games without having to travel out of the comfort of my own living room.
First off, I need to say that I don’t condone or recommend gambling. It’s ok for a few fun and games, but don’t put money you need into these games. It’s not the way to strike it rich. Also, I find that money you win in a game leads to an easy come, easy go attitude about money that’s not healthy. Make a living the old fashioned way: with an entrepreneurial spirit and some good ol’ elbow grease!
That said, it can be enjoyable to play some games for stakes every once in a while.
Of course as with all online activities there are some pros and cons.
There are many advantages to playing games in an online casino:
Ease of access: You can play from the comfort of your own living room. Need I say more?
Comfort: You don’t need to get dressed up to join in the games when you are playing online. There’s a lot to be said for comfort. Whether it be in games of pure chance such as online slots games or games that require more strategy and skill like poker, if you are clear headed and comfortable, chances are that you will perform better.
Playing multiple games at once: Most online sites allow you to participate in multiple games at once. This helps if you are playing games that have a grind element such as poker. You can fold a hand at one table and play a hand at another. Many professional online poker players employ this strategy.
Anonymity: Having an element of anonymity gives you a lot of security. You can feel comfortable playing with other strangers without feeling awkward about being in a casino.
Security: On the rare occasion that you win a lot of money, an online casino does provide a layer of security. Your money is deposited electronically. You don’t have to worry about carrying a large amount of cash around with you.
Along with the advantages of playing at an online casino, there are also disadvantages:
Too easy to play too much: It can be easy to get caught up. Afterall, the casino is right in your living room. Take a break. Go outside!
Getting your cash out: Depending on where you live, there are restrictions on online transfers to online gaming sites. This can make it difficult to cash out your earnings. I did have some instances where paper checks were fed ex’d to my door. But it’s a nervous feeling having an envelope with a large paycheck sitting outside your front door for any period of time. Not to mention that you can potentially lose your money if the site goes under or funds get frozen by government agencies which has been known to happen.
No human interaction: Of course if you are a poker player, you lose the ability to spot the human factors. Tells and nervous ticks are hidden behind a computer screen. Does that pause mean the person is nervous or did their connection simply lag?
These are just a few of my thoughts about online casinos. It can be a quick way to play a few games for stakes. There are advantages and disadvantages and it can be just as fun as playing in vegas. But keep in mind, it’s just for fun! Don’t take it too seriously and don’t get caught up!
