Social media marketing is on the rise, and may soon even surpass search engine marketing. What does this mean to those of us in the blogosphere?
It means that it’s time to develop and hone new skills. Learn how to use social media to your advantage. Learn to twitter, facebook, and stumbleupon. We are in the Web 2.0 era.
From a practical standpoint, if you are a freelancer, you may want to focus your portfolio on your expertise in social media. Display more of your custom twitter profile pages, or your facebook fan pages.
Employers are spending more money than ever in developing their social media marketing strategy. You can read more about it in my previous post here.
For those of use who are running our own blogs, we see the significance of social media on a daily basis. Currently, I get a good majority of my traffic from social media sources, such as twitter and stumbleupon.
Lately, I’ve seen quite a few blog posts that talk about how to become more successful in social media. Many of them list methods that help you encourage your visitors follow you and learn more about you so they will pass the word about you and your services.
These methods include:
- Tweeting or sharing famous or controversial quotes
- Putting large social media buttons on your pages to encourage people to follow
- Follow others
- Ask your customers to become your fans on facebook. (Are you following me on facebook?)
- Take out ads
- use outside applications such as twiends
Many of these methods give you ways to directly gain followers. If you do x you will get y followers. But the true power of social media lies in the word social.
When you get more followers, you are hoping to gain access to their network. You want to find ways to encourage people to not only follow you, but to share and pass the word to their network. This is the true power of social media.
Recently, Glen over at viperchill discussed a method to encourage others to share your service with their network in his article about increasing leads and conversion rates.
This is a service that was originally devised at paywithatweet.com. The idea is to encourage others to share by giving away a free gift when someone shares your link or website with a tweet or on facebook.
This works very similar to an opt in incentive that we see for mailing lists. However the difference is that all that’s required is a simple tweet or facebook share. After someone shares through the application, it will take them to the download page to get their free gift.
It’s an awesome way to get people sharing.
This is the way it works
Glen’s service at cloudflood is just a simple free process to generate traffic.
The first step is to create your free giveaway. This can be anything of your choice that someone can download.
Next, just go to cloudflood and create your button:
All you need to do is provide some simple information, including the link to the freebie and the link to where you want your traffic to go.
Place the button on your site.
In my case, I placed the button in my sidebar to test the effectiveness.
This is just an ingenious way to encourage others to share and utilize the full power of social media. You are just working to gain one follower, you are tapping a network of potential followers.
I’m sure many of you will come up with new and creative methods of encouraging others to share. In the meantime, if you enjoyed this article, try out my share button and pay it forward!
