Search engine optimization (SEO) basically refers to promoting or making a website more visible. Visibility is higher for websites and web pages whose results come on top of the search list, this leads to more users frequenting your site and ultimately more sales. When optimizing your site, one should consider various things including how the search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo work, the use of specific keywords, editing the website content etc. Some of the other very important tips to consider include but are not limited to the following:
A) Review Where Your Site Ranks
This will enable you to identify and monitor your specific search standings. This can easily be done by using the Google toolbar. Once you have identified where your users originate from, what terms they searched for to land on your site and what their search interests are, then you are able to track the effects of your SEO efforts.
B) Have Unique, Useful & Updated Information
The content on your website should be regularly reviewed and updated in order to increase the traffic flow. A CEO Blog for example is ranked highly as an SEO technique as it generates more interest in your site and helps you reach out to your clients and prospects in a personalized fashion.
C) Use of Keywords
This generally involves placing the appropriate words throughout your site, ranging from URL’s, titles, headers, content and even image names. The key words should be the exact phrases that your target audience would be searching for to get to your site. However, too much keyword stuffing can lead to spamming which will lead to your site being ignored by search engines.
D) Use Social Media
This strategy helps generate more traffic to your site. By linking and distributing the fresh and interesting content from your site to social networking platforms like Facebook and Twitter, you increase your visibility and the chances of users of social networks following the links to your site and also the number of places where your site is likely to be accessed increases.
E) Linking Back
Putting internal links in your site is the most basic strategy and it helps increase traffic to the individual pages. When you link back to yourself you should consider the relevance of the links and always avoid linking excessively.
F) External Links
Having a relationship with other sites that rank closely to yours is also quite useful and can enable you generate more traffic to your site by tapping onto the users of other sites. Having your link on their website and also putting their link on your website will create a win-win situation for both sites.
G) Have a Sitemap
By creating a sitemap, it is easier for users to search your site and also enables the search engines to direct traffic accordingly; however the number of clicks or path to the actual information should not be too long to avoid annoying users.
The importance of search engine optimization cannot be overestimated. It is however important that the right techniques are applied to ensure that your site gets the desired traffic, is user friendly, easily accessible and contains the right content to enable you generate business. Poor SEO techniques can cause your website to be flagged as spam leading to loss of business opportunities.
