This week actually has a couple of semi-significant events if you are keeping an eye on social media. Both Twitter and Google are working to become more social. Twitter is recognizing that many users may want to follow someone directly from their website, while Google is set to launch their Groupon competitor.
Twitter Follow Button
Almost all blogs that I visit have a twitter button. Of course, like mine, these buttons are somewhat makeshift. It’s simply an icon with a link to the blogger’s twitter account. While it works, it may be somewhat unsatisfactory as your readers need to go through two steps in order to start following you on Twitter.
Enter the twitter follow button.
Twitter has decided to assist in solving this problem. While this solution is long overdue, it’s better late than never. Earlier this week, twitter launched their own twitter follow button.
This button allows you to automatically follow a person on twitter right from their website. Blog owners will love this as it doesn’t require that new followers leave their blog in order to start following someone.
The Twitter Follow Button is easy to set up from the twitter resources page:

Twitter also had another announcement that they made simultaneously with the launch of their twitter follow button.
They announced the acquisition of AdGrok.
AdGrok is a PPC advertising company that is a Google Adsense partner. Primarily, AdGrok allows business owners to automate the process of choosing and bidding on keywords on Google AdWords.
This acquisition could signal Twitter finally working towards earning a profit. Perhaps they will be using AdGrok for its own promoted tweets.
We are well aware that Twitter is working towards implementing more advertising into it’s monetization plan. This is one more step in that process.
Look for potentially more promoted tweets and trends in the future.
Finally, in the news this week, Google is officially launching its long awaited social coupon service.
Google Offers launched its first offer in Portland, Oregon today. This first offer is for a coffee shop, Floyd’s Coffee, in Portland. Google is also working with other local Portland businesses to partner up and bring you more offers.
One can easily subscribe to Google Offers here.
If you don’t live in the Portland area, don’t worry. Google Offers will launch soon in New York City and San Francisco.
Google offers appears to be off to a decidedly slow start. It’ll be interesting to see how they fare against an established social coupon site like Groupons.
Although they only have the one offer so far, a powerhouse like Google should be enticing for businesses. It may not be long before Google Offers is a viable competitor to Groupons.
