If you haven’t heard about the viral video of Tommy Jordan, the father of a willful teenager, shooting his daughter’s laptop and posting it on youtube, then you need to watch this video!
Whether you agree or disagree with the parenting style of shooting his daughter’s laptop, this is just an awesome example of social media parenting.
While, I don’t agree with using a gun as an example of any form of disciplining (including shooting inanimate objects), as a parent, I totally agree with the sentiment that a child should not disrespect their parents. However, that’s not the point of this post.
The awesome thing about this post is that it demonstrates the phenomenal change that technology, the internet, and social media has made to our society today. Technology is not only providing new and cutting edge methods of managing and making money. It’s also a source for new parenting styles.
Remember that phrase, it takes a village to raise a child. Well, these days the whole world can become involved. I think it’s an awesome demonstration of using this new medium in an innovative way for parenting.
Also, it opens the forum up for discussion on parenting and perhaps some feedback for the family.
Regardless of your personal feelings about guns, I’d be willing to bet that Tommy Jordan’s daughter learned her lesson. She’s not going to be posting disrespectful messages about her parents on facebook anymore.
Is it possible that social media can be used as a good parenting tool? You can use it as a forum for discussion and get others involved in your parenting. You can use it for positive social reinforcement for your child or find some value in the peer pressure that comes with social networking.
