In today’s Internet-centric world, it’s important for professionals and job seekers to keep a close eye on their social media profiles. Whether you are searching for a career or trying to build your personal brand, social media is an essential part of modern networking. Be careful, though – an inappropriate post or unsavory information can drive HR reps away from your resume. Keep yourself looking good online by cleaning up your Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts! A good rule of thumb is to make sure that all content can be considered “family friendly.” Your friends might think you’re boring and that you’re being too careful, but it’s better to err on the side of caution. A great social media profile could significantly improve your chances of getting a great career! Here are some tips and tricks for dabbling in the world of networking through digital media.

  • Set your profile to “private.” This is a safe bet for keeping your online persona squeaky clean, at least among your acquaintances.   • Remove any inappropriate photos or posts. This may seem like an obvious suggestion, but you should do it anyways. Try to view your profile from an outsider’s perspective (Facebook makes it easy to do this) so you can see what non-friends or non-followers can see. A good rule of thumb is as follows: if you wouldn’t want your grandmother (or mother) to see it, you shouldn’t post it online. Potential employers don’t need (or want) to see photos of you getting rowdy at a party or half-dressed on the beach in Puerto Vallarta, and posts like those could discourage them from pursuing your application any further.
  • Consider building a public, professional account. This applies especially to Twitter accounts. Twitter is a great way to connect with brands and professionals you admire. Some companies even hire interns based on how well they can “sell” themselves through just one tweet! Many industries and businesses also hold chats or Q&A sessions on Twitter, using a specific hashtag to corral the conversation (#AskNPRInterns, for example).
  • Use LinkedIn or industry recruiting sites to connect with professionals. Follow your favorite businesses on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to hear about job postings and learn more about the company.  After networking with other professionals, connect with them on LinkedIn. They’ll be able to see your resume and what you’re up to professionally, which could increase your chances of being remembered when hiring time comes around!  You can also use industry HR sites like LeapDoctor (a recruiting site for healthcare professionals) to search for jobs and connect with potential employers.

  1. Well in my opinion this will be a good option when it’s about finding a job in real life you you need to clean up your profile and make it private if your bosses decide to check it.
    But in online marketing, I think no one will going to search you on FB or other social media sites. They just require your correct payout information and your email address to communicate with you, and in many of them you don’t even need to put your real name, just username.

    However this is good guide to thing about what information we sharing online about us and consider is it good idea and can it be abused by some third party sites or people.
