Although it may be hard to believe in these relatively early days for social media, there have already been a few casualties. Both Myspace and Bebo have both had there spell in the spotlight and there are countless others that have had such a small impact that you probably are not even aware of their existence. And even though Myspace has been re-launched by Justin Timberlake, it has so far failed to reach the sky high heights of the previous version.
So what is it about Facebook that has meant it has been able to fend off big competition from sites such as Twitter and Pinterest and still remain at the forefront of the social media landscape? Facebook has been around for nearly ten years now and shows no sign of slowing down in its attempt to achieve world peace through everybody becoming ‘friends’ with each other and so it’s time we looked at this social media marathon runner’s credentials.
It Has An Intriguing Back Story – Anyone who has seen the film ‘The Social Network’ will know that Facebook has an interesting story behind it which has enabled it to create a big buzz about everything it does and has led to continuous publicity surrounding the legal issues involved in its inception. The fact that there is controversy over who initially had the idea for Facebook and that a film was made detailing this has put the site firmly in thoughts of the western world.
It Serves A Different Purpose To Other Sites – The biggest reason why Facebook has managed to fight off the advances of platforms such as Twitter and LinkedIn is because it found its purpose from the start and has stuck with it. Facebook does everything that you need it to do and no other social media site can match it for user experience. Yes the 140 character tweeting of Twitter has become a worldwide hit but Facebook offers so much more detail and diversity.
It Was The Original – Although hard-core users of Myspace will probably disagree, Facebook was arguably the original social media platform and has therefore maintained a large chunk of its audience from these early days. When the site first became popular nobody had ever seen anything like it before and this has helped it to become the massive hit that it is today. Since then it has snowballed and now has an estimated 750,000,000 unique monthly visitors; that’s three times more than Twitter.
It’s Constantly Changing – Unlike other sites that seem to stand still, every time you log into Facebook these days there is a new feature that they are showing off. Facebook has constantly changed to suit the growing market and as its users have demanded more from the site, it has listened and adapted.
No better example of this is the recent announcement of Facebook’s new graph search. Coming soon to a profile near you will be a new intelligent search engine that will allow you to find things depending on how they are rated by your friends.
All of this means that Facebook has not only been able to keep itself on top of the social media podium for this long but that it is in good stead to fight off more competition in the future. This is most likely to come in the form of Google’s new platform Google +. With social media becoming a big part of SEO and Google deciding to rank their own social site above the others, we may see this new contender coming up on the rails. However, I believe Facebook’s stamina will see it through for many more years to come.
